I have actively contributed to the training of human capital in the field of marine restoration, emphasizing its critical role in addressing the challenges posed by climate change (See: https://ciep.cl/inicio/2022/03/02/se-estudiara-el-potencial-de-la-tecnologia-biorock-para-la-restauracion-de-bancos-naturales-de-chorito/). My work highlights the importance of engaging new students in effective, science-based marine restoration initiatives that combine ecological, technological, and socio-environmental perspectives. In particular, my future proyect is promote the development of new postgraduate research focused on the application of electrostimulation techniques for enhancing marine habitat recovery and improving aquaculture practices. These emerging approaches not only offer innovative solutions for restoring degraded marine ecosystems but also open new pathways for sustainable resource management and climate adaptation strategies.
Semilla-PATSER proyect: Impact of the exploitation of natural mithilid stocks by the marble crab fishery in west-central Patagonia and evaluation of restoration measures using Biorock technology".
Executive summary
The objective of this project is to coordinate socio-ecological research with a technological innovation component in order to evaluate the use of the M. chilensis ecosystem service, quantify the ecological effect of its extraction, and evaluate, through a pilot experimental test, the potential of using very low voltage electric fields for the restoration of natural mussel beds and associated fauna, as well as for potential aquaculture uses. This research is unprecedented in Chile in terms of the coordination of socio-ecological, technological, and marine restoration aspects using cutting-edge science that will enable the transfer of scientific and technological knowledge to decision-makers on the management of this fishery. In addition, this project aims to advance the development of non-passive farming systems that improve the resilience of mussel aquaculture to the threats of climate change and promote future projects on topics related to bioremediation and the recovery of ecosystems degraded by anthropogenic activities such as salmon farming.
